AJ Lee Breaks Silence on WWE Return, Challenges Becky Lynch for Intercontinental Title
AJ Lee has returned to singles competition in WWE after a hiatus of over a decade, with her upcoming match set against Becky Lynch for the Women's Intercontinental Championship. During an interview with Michael Cole on the Elimination Chamber pre-show, Lee outlined the factors influencing her decision to return and accept Lynch's challenge.
Motivation Behind the Comeback
Lee stated that Becky Lynch's actions and standing in the industry were primary factors in her decision to return. She explained her belief that Lynch deliberately sought her out.
"I feel like Becky chose me. She went after my husband and I think there was a chance she knew that would maybe get me out of retirement."
Lee emphasized that Lynch's status was a significant reason for her engagement, indicating she would not have accepted a challenge from almost anyone else. She described Lynch as "this Mount Everest" and acknowledged Lynch's current position as a top performer.
"She’ll say it too, she’s one of the best there is right now."
Lee expressed a desire to demonstrate her ability to compete and dominate across different eras of professional wrestling. This ambition to prove her mettle against current top talent appears to be a driving force.
The Path to Return
Regarding her return, Lee revealed that it was not an immediate decision. For several years, she had consistently declined offers from WWE for a comeback.
She described a turning point in her perspective, where her answer to a potential return transitioned from a firm "no" to a "maybe."
"There was a day where I woke up and the answer was maybe, and once it was a maybe, I knew it was a yes."
This shift in mindset ultimately paved the way for her unexpected return to the squared circle. Lee is now scheduled to compete for championship gold against Becky Lynch, marking a highly anticipated return to active competition.
