Windows 11 Insider Previews Deliver Enhanced Batch File Security and Shared Audio Features

Microsoft has issued new Windows 11 Insider Preview builds that introduce security and performance enhancements for batch file and CMD script execution, alongside updates to the Shared Audio feature. These capabilities are available to users in the Beta and Dev channels.

Batch File Security Enhancements

A more secure processing mode for batch files and CMD scripts has been introduced. This mode is designed to prevent batch files from being altered during their execution.

This update aims to enhance performance and security within enterprise environments, particularly where scripted workflows are utilized. It ensures code integrity by requiring signature validation once per batch file, rather than per statement.

  • Activation: IT administrators can enable this mode by adding the LockBatchFilesInUse registry value under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Command Processor. Policy authors can also activate it using the LockBatchFilesWhenInUse application manifest control.
  • Purpose: This update aims to enhance performance and security within enterprise environments, particularly where scripted workflows are utilized. It ensures code integrity by requiring signature validation once per batch file, rather than per statement.

Shared Audio Feature Updates

The Shared Audio feature, initially introduced in October, has received several improvements. This feature allows audio to be shared between two compatible output devices, such as headphones, speakers, earbuds, or hearing aids.

  • Volume Control: Users can now adjust volume independently for each listener and device.
  • Taskbar Indicator: A new taskbar indicator appears during active sharing sessions, providing a visual reminder and a shortcut to sharing settings.
  • Expanded Device Support: Compatibility has been extended to include additional Bluetooth LE Audio accessories. These new compatible devices include:
    • Samsung Galaxy Buds 4
    • Samsung Galaxy Buds 4 Pro
    • Sony WF-1000XM6
    • Xbox Wireless Headset
