Nomadic Dreams Endure: Australian Couple Continues Road Trip Amidst Cancer Diagnosis
Duncan Jones, 44, and Max Pascual, 46, an Australian couple who began an indefinite road trip in early 2024, are continuing their travels despite Jones receiving a diagnosis of stage 4 salivary duct carcinoma. After becoming debt-free, selling their possessions, and exchanging their house for a 1997 caravan, the couple had aimed for a nomadic lifestyle. Jones has undergone surgery and is scheduled for radiotherapy, while the couple has stated their intention to maintain their travels, adapting treatment to their lifestyle.
Despite the advanced cancer diagnosis and ongoing treatment requirements, Jones and Pascual have stated their firm intention to continue their nomadic lifestyle.
A Life on the Road: From Debt-Free to Nomad
In early 2024, Duncan Jones and Max Pascual commenced an indefinite road trip around Australia. Prior to their departure, they sold their belongings, resigned from their full-time employment, and achieved a debt-free status. They traded their house for a 1997 caravan, expressing a clear preference for a nomadic lifestyle over conventional employment and debt. During their initial year on the road, their travels took them through Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales, and Queensland.
An Unforeseen Challenge: Stage 4 Diagnosis on the Journey
The couple's journey encountered a significant development when Jones discovered a lump on his neck while in Colac, western Victoria. Following medical consultation, including a visit to a general practitioner and subsequent specialist appointments involving a biopsy and CT scan conducted during their travels, Jones received a diagnosis of stage 4 salivary duct carcinoma. This rare form of cancer has an estimated five-year survival rate of approximately 35 percent.
Jones underwent surgery to remove the tumor, a procedure that has affected his vision and facial nerves. He is scheduled to receive radiotherapy treatment as part of his ongoing care.
Adapting and Continuing: The Nomadic Lifestyle Persists
Even with the advanced cancer diagnosis and the necessity for ongoing treatment, Jones and Pascual remain committed to their nomadic lifestyle. Jones reported that the medical system has accommodated his treatment while traveling, allowing them to adapt their care to their mobile existence.
Jones is now medically retired due to his condition. To manage their finances, Pascual undertakes temporary employment at caravan parks. The couple plans to continue their journey across Australia, with their future travel contingent on Jones's health status and treatment requirements.
