A Legacy of Melody and Song

Sedaka was recognized for his distinctive soprano voice and bright melodies, becoming a prominent figure in the early rock 'n' roll era. Throughout his six-decade career, he received five Grammy Award nominations.

Brill Building Icon

He was a significant songwriter at the Brill Building, collaborating with lyricist Howard Greenfield on hits such as "Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen," "Calendar Girl," and "Oh! Carol." This era solidified his reputation as a prolific hitmaker.

1970s Comeback

After a period of reduced activity, Sedaka experienced a comeback in the 1970s, largely due to the support of Elton John. John signed Sedaka to his Rocket Records label, which led to the successful album "Sedaka's Back." This resurgence brought his music to a new generation of fans.

Enduring Chart Success

With writing partner Philip Cody, he achieved chart-topping success with songs like "Bad Blood" and "Laughter in the Rain." His song "Love Will Keep Us Together" also became a major hit for The Captain & Tennille in 1975, further showcasing his songwriting prowess.

From Prodigy to Enduring Legend

Born in 1939, Sedaka was a piano prodigy, earning a scholarship to the Juilliard School in New York at age nine. He grew up in Brooklyn's Brighton Beach, an area where a street, Neil Sedaka Way, is now named in his honor.

Sedaka continued performing well into his 80s, maintaining his vocal range and enthusiasm. He expressed that while being a legend was good, being a "working legend" was even better. His compositions sold millions globally and have been covered by artists ranging from Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra to The 5th Dimension and Nickelback.

He wrote or co-wrote over 700 songs, earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1983. Sedaka is survived by his wife Leba, daughter Dara, son Marc, and three grandchildren.
