Yallourn Power Station Fire Under Control After Lightning Strike

A fire at the Yallourn Power Station in Victoria's Latrobe Valley was declared under control just before 5 pm after emergency services responded to reports of a lightning strike. The incident, which began just before midday, involved burning embers within a coal bunker at the facility.

The Incident Unfolds

Reports emerged just before midday regarding a lightning strike at the Yallourn Power Station. EnergyAustralia, the owner of the plant, confirmed that a lightning strike from a severe storm had hit the facility.

This lightning strike led to the discovery of embers and hot spots within the Raw Coal Bunker building. Upon arrival, Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) crews observed a blaze measuring approximately 40 meters by 20 meters high.

Swift Emergency Response

Fire Rescue Victoria crews were swiftly dispatched to the scene. Approximately 70 firefighters, supported by 10 firetrucks and two waterbombing aircraft, worked tirelessly to contain the fire. Ambulance Victoria was also called to the site as a precautionary measure.

The fire was declared under control nearly five hours after the initial dispatch, shortly before 5 pm. Firefighters are expected to remain on site for ongoing safety monitoring.

No Major Impact Reported

EnergyAustralia reported that an investigation immediately followed the lightning strike. The company stated that no significant damage was detected at the power station, and no injuries were sustained by personnel.
