Topuria Downplays Tsarukyan Challenge, Remains Open to Future Bout

UFC Lightweight Champion Ilia Topuria has shared his thoughts on a potential future fight against top contender Arman Tsarukyan. Topuria stated he does not consider Tsarukyan to be his toughest challenge, even as he is currently expected to defend his title against interim champion Justin Gaethje later this year. Tsarukyan, who was bypassed for an interim title shot, has openly expressed a strong desire to fight Topuria.

Topuria's Perspective on Tsarukyan

During a live stream with Adin Ross, Ilia Topuria discussed his views on a potential fight with Arman Tsarukyan. He indicated that he does not see Tsarukyan as a formidable opponent, stating, "Arman, easy. Because he will panic. With me, he will panic. What's he going to do?" Topuria also emphasized his own resilience, asserting, "I know about myself that there’s not a situation that I’m going to give up."

Topuria cited several points to support his assessment. He referenced Tsarukyan's previous losses to Islam Makhachev and Mateusz Gamrot, as well as an early-career knockout. He further suggested that Tsarukyan's finishing ability is primarily effective against fatigued opponents, often leading to ground and pound, rather than against well-prepared fighters.

Arman Tsarukyan's Recent Performance

Arman Tsarukyan holds a professional UFC record of 10-2 and is currently on an impressive five-fight winning streak. He was initially scheduled for a rematch against Islam Makhachev for the lightweight title in January 2025 but withdrew due to a last-minute injury. Following this, Tsarukyan served as a backup fighter for a vacant title bout involving Topuria and Charles Oliveira. He later defeated Dan Hooker in November at UFC Qatar, solidifying his position as a top contender. Tsarukyan has also participated in various grappling competitions.

Openness to a Future Bout

Despite his assessment, Topuria stated he is open to fighting Tsarukyan if the UFC decides to schedule the bout. "If they call me and tell me they want me to fight with Arman, no f*cking problem... If they give me that fight, I'm fighting him. No problem," he commented, expressing his willingness. Topuria also noted that he does not dictate his opponents to the promotion.
