Cuba Grapples with Severe Fuel Shortages as Venezuelan Oil Supply Halts

Cuba is currently experiencing significant fuel shortages, with gas deliveries ceasing in parts of Havana for several months.

This situation follows the removal of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro from power on January 3 by US troops, after which the United States asserted control over Venezuela's oil industry, leading to a halt in crude oil shipments to Cuba.

Current Situation in Cuba

For several months, residential areas in Havana suburbs have reported a cessation of gas deliveries. This disruption has led some residents to resort to using alternative cooking methods, such as firewood and charcoal, to meet their daily needs. The current fuel shortages occur against a backdrop of economic challenges that Cuba has faced since the coronavirus pandemic.

Developments in Venezuela and Impact on Oil Supply

On January 3, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was removed from power following actions by US troops. Prior to this event, Venezuela was a key ally to Cuba and a primary supplier of crude oil. Subsequent to these developments, the United States asserted control over Venezuela's oil industry. As a direct consequence, the supply of crude oil from Venezuela to Cuba has ceased.
