Mayor Mamdani Meets Trump: Discusses NYC Housing Investment and Student Detainments
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani met with President Donald Trump at the White House to discuss significant housing investments for New York City. The unannounced, hour-long meeting also addressed the detainment of several Columbia University students.
During his visit, Mayor Mamdani presented President Trump with a mock newspaper front page. The headline, “Trump to City: Let’s Build,” was a direct reference to a historical headline from 1975, setting a forward-looking tone for the discussions.
Anna Bahr, Mamdani's communications director, stated that the mock front page aimed to illustrate the potential positive public reaction to new federal housing investments.
Landmark Housing Plan Proposed for Queens
A central topic of the discussion was a transformative housing plan. This involves securing over $21 billion in federal grants to construct a deck over the Sunnyside Yard rail site in Queens.
This ambitious project is designed to enable the creation of 12,000 new affordable homes. Furthermore, it is estimated to generate 30,000 jobs, representing the largest housing and infrastructure investment in New York City in over five decades.
Mayor Intervenes for Detained Students
The meeting also tackled the urgent issue of student detainment. Mayor Mamdani brought up the case of Columbia University student Ellie Aghayeva, an Azerbaijani national, who had been arrested earlier that day by federal immigration agents. Agents had accessed a campus residence under the pretext of searching for a missing person.
Mayor Mamdani urged President Trump to consider her release, and subsequently, Trump informed the mayor in a phone call that Aghayeva would be released.
Mamdani also provided White House chief of staff Susie Wiles with a list of four other students: Mahmoud Khalil, Yunseo Chung, Mohsen Mahdawi, and Leqaa Kordia. These students had been detained by federal authorities for their involvement in pro-Palestinian protests.
While all cases are ongoing, only Leqaa Kordia currently remains in custody. Her cousin, Hamzah Abushaban, has issued a statement advocating for her release.
