NRL Market Update: Bears Build for 2027, Shibasaki’s Future in Limbo

Key Storylines: The Perth Bears are rapidly assembling their roster for their 2027 debut, while the Brisbane Broncos face a critical decision on in-demand centre Gehamat Shibasaki.

Gehamat Shibasaki’s Contract Situation

Brisbane Broncos centre Gehamat Shibasaki is currently without a contract for the upcoming season. He earned $160,000 last season, and reports indicate a new deal could increase his value by $500,000. In 2025, Shibasaki debuted for the Queensland Maroons, won a premiership, and played three Tests for the Kangaroos.

Five clubs have reportedly expressed interest: the Brisbane Broncos, the Perth Bears, the PNG Chiefs, and two Sydney-based clubs.

"His attitude and work ethic are qualities we value," said Broncos coach Michael Maguire, stating the club's intention to retain Shibasaki.

Shibasaki’s agent, Wayde Rushton, confirmed that external options are being explored. He noted that the anticipated departures of Payne Haas and Adam Reynolds at season’s end could create salary cap space, potentially increasing the likelihood of Shibasaki remaining. Rushton stated Shibasaki has an affinity for Brisbane, but salary cap pressures necessitate evaluating his fit.

The Broncos are also reportedly pursuing Newcastle Knights centre Dane Gagai as a potential replacement. Gagai, who debuted at Brisbane in 2011, has been told by the Knights they cannot offer him a contract due to cap constraints. Brisbane has reportedly tabled a deal worth over $250,000.

Perth Bears Recruitment

The Perth Bears are assembling their roster for their inaugural 2027 season, with approximately 14 players currently under contract—nearly half of their top 30 roster.

Confirmed Signings:

  • Siosifa Talakai: The 28-year-old has reportedly agreed to a three-year deal (2027-2029). Talakai, whose current contract expires in 2026, became eligible to negotiate from November 1, 2025. He has played 133 NRL games for the Rabbitohs and Sharks, scoring 27 tries, and has represented NSW (two Origins) and Tonga (two Tests).
  • Scott Sorensen: The Panthers premiership winner has signed a two-year deal.

Reported Targets:

  • Marata Niukore: The Bears have held discussions with the Warriors forward (29, 18 tries in 157 NRL games).
  • Jack Cole: Discussions have been held with the Panthers playmaker (22, three tries in 17 games).
  • Gairo Voro: Coach Mal Meninga confirmed interest in the London Broncos player, noting his performance in last year's Pacific Test series for PNG.
  • Luke Garner: The Penrith forward, off-contract at the end of 2026, is reportedly attracting interest.

Comments on Gehamat Shibasaki

Bears coach Mal Meninga acknowledged interest in Shibasaki but indicated the player's potential asking price, following a successful season, might exceed the club's financial capabilities. Meninga stated he assumed Shibasaki would remain with the Broncos and noted the club has not pursued the matter heavily.

"I assume he'll stay with the Broncos," Meninga said, expressing satisfaction with the club's current signings while acknowledging the ongoing need for recruitment.

Other NRL Player Market Updates

  • Alex Johnston: The South Sydney winger, the NRL’s record try-scorer, has indicated he would consider a move to the PNG Chiefs franchise if they enter the NRL in 2028. Johnston, who has PNG heritage, is contracted until the end of 2025. He would be 33 if he joined the Chiefs.

  • Francis Molo: The Dolphins prop has reportedly signed a two-year extension valued at approximately $1 million, securing him until the end of 2028. Molo, 31, received offers from other NRL clubs and Super League teams.

  • Bronson Xerri: The Bulldogs centre has met with at least two rival clubs, including the Melbourne Storm and Parramatta Eels. Xerri is contracted until the end of 2027, but the Bulldogs are reportedly open to letting him leave. The Bulldogs are close to signing Penrith’s Jesse McLean for next season.

  • Kodi Nikorima: The Dolphins player is weighing offers from rival clubs and stated he will decide in the next couple of weeks. He expressed a desire to stay, calling Brisbane home.

  • Herbie Farnworth: Despite rumors linking him to the Sydney Roosters, Farnworth stated he has not spoken to anyone from that club. He indicated he will speak to the Dolphins first about an extension; he is contracted for this year and next.
