V'landys: Rugby League Sets Example for Other Codes
Peter V’landys, chairman of the Australian Rugby League Commission, recently offered his perspective on the relationship between rugby league and Australian rules football (AFL). V’landys asserted that rugby league sets an example for other codes.
Comments on AFL Concepts
V'landys highlighted specific AFL initiatives in his commentary. He referenced the AFL's decision to reintroduce its State of Origin concept. This concept, V'landys noted, had been paused by the AFL for decades, with the last match occurring in 1999.
He also reiterated his view on the AFL's "Gather Round" event. V'landys stated that "Gather Round" is comparable to the NRL’s "Magic Round." The NRL’s "Magic Round" was reportedly adopted from the UK's Super League, which first hosted a "Magic Weekend" in 2007.
Direct Quote from Triple M
During an appearance on Triple M, V'landys made a pointed statement regarding the AFL's approach:
"Well firstly, can you explain what AFL is? How can they have a State of Origin? That’s unusual. It’s all in Victoria, most of the games, aren’t they?"
