Road Collapse Swallows Vehicles Near University of Nebraska-Omaha

A road collapsed near the University of Nebraska-Omaha on Tuesday, causing two vehicles to fall into the ground. The incident occurred at 67th and Pacific streets around 3:30 p.m. local time.

Incident Unfolds

University security cameras captured footage showing two vehicles at an intersection when the ground suddenly gave way. A third vehicle pulling up behind them appeared to precede the collapse.

Emergency crews swiftly responded to the scene. Fortunately, the occupants of the vehicles had managed to exit the hole prior to the authorities' arrival. Crucially, no injuries were reported as a result of the incident. In addition to the road collapse, a water main also broke during the event.

Aftermath and Ongoing Response

The cause of the road collapse has not yet been determined by officials.

Several hours after the incident, a heavy-duty tow truck equipped with a crane was deployed to retrieve the cars from the crater. Following the vehicle recovery, crews began the arduous task of removing concrete debris from the site.

University of Nebraska-Omaha Public Safety Lt. Dan Martin issued a cautionary statement, indicating that the sinkhole might expand. However, as of Wednesday night, no additional sinkholes had been observed.

Officials have stated that the affected street will remain closed for an unspecified "several days" as investigation and repair work continue.
