Amazon Introduces Customizable Personality Styles for Alexa+

View source

Amazon has introduced three new personality styles—Brief, Chill, and Sweet—for its AI assistant, Alexa+. These styles are designed to adjust Alexa's conversational tone and became available to users earlier this month. The introduction of these features aims to allow the AI assistant to adapt to individual communication preferences.

The company stated that the introduction of these features aims to allow the AI assistant to adapt to individual communication preferences.

New Personality Styles Revealed

The newly released personality styles for Alexa+ include:

  • Brief: Intended to provide shorter, direct responses.
  • Chill: Designed to offer a laid-back and friendly conversational tone.
  • Sweet: Created to deliver warmer, more enthusiastic, and positive interactions.

These styles are developed based on five core dimensions that define Alexa's personality: expressiveness, emotional openness, formality, directness, and humor. For instance, the Brief style is characterized by being concise, casual, and direct, with minimal humor. Amazon has indicated that these are the initial styles to be released, with additional options planned for future introduction.

Access and Customization

Alexa+ is included for Amazon Prime subscribers and is available for non-Prime users at a cost of $19.99 per month. Users can modify Alexa's personality style through voice commands on an Echo device, such as by stating, "Alexa, change your personality style." Alternatively, changes can be made via the Alexa app by navigating to Device Settings and selecting the "Personality Style" feature. The new personality modes are compatible with all eight existing Alexa voices, which can also be adjusted within the Alexa app under Devices > Settings > General > Alexa’s Voice.

Broader Context of AI Personality Development

Amazon stated that the development of these personalities was influenced by feedback from early adopters concerning Alexa's tone. The company aims for the personal assistant to adapt to individual communication preferences.

The integration of personality into AI models is an ongoing area of development within the industry. Previous instances with other AI models, such as OpenAI's GPT-4o, have been associated with allegations from users regarding the development of dependencies or exacerbated mental health issues. Despite these reported concerns, user data indicates a general preference for customizing AI responses. OpenAI, for example, launched features in December allowing ChatGPT users to adjust the AI's base style and tone, including aspects like warmth and enthusiasm.
