Amazon Alexa+ Introduces Customizable Personality Styles, Including Adult-Oriented 'Sassy' Option
Amazon has expanded the capabilities of its Alexa+ AI assistant by introducing several new personality styles, including "Brief," "Chill," "Sweet," and an adult-oriented "Sassy" option. These styles allow users to customize Alexa's conversational tone and interaction patterns, with Amazon indicating plans for further additions. The company states the introduction of these features is based on user feedback and aims to allow the assistant to adapt to individual communication preferences.
Amazon's new personality styles for Alexa+ are designed to adapt the AI assistant to individual communication preferences, building on user feedback.
Initial Personality Styles Introduced
Amazon initially launched "Brief," "Chill," and "Sweet" personality styles for Alexa+, available to all users earlier this month. These styles are designed to adjust Alexa's conversational tone and are built upon five core dimensions: expressiveness, emotional openness, formality, directness, and humor.
- Brief: Provides shorter, direct responses. This style is characterized by being concise, casual, direct, and having minimal humor.
- Chill: Offers a laid-back and friendly tone.
- Sweet: Delivers warmer, more enthusiastic, and positive interactions.
Introduction of the 'Sassy' Personality
Amazon later expanded these options with the introduction of a "Sassy" personality style for Alexa+. This style is exclusively designated for adults. Activation requires users to complete additional security checks within the Alexa app, such as Face ID on iOS. The "Sassy" personality is also unavailable for use when Amazon Kids mode is enabled on the device.
Users are informed that the "Sassy" style incorporates explicit language and may contain mature subject matter, which is the basis for the mandatory security verification. Amazon describes this style as aiming to provide helpful information while incorporating wit and "roast" elements, delivering "reality checks with charm," "compliments that somehow sting," and "equal-opportunity irreverence."
Despite warnings about mature content, Amazon has clarified that the "Sassy" personality will not engage in explicit sexual content, hate speech, illegal activities, personal attacks, or any content deemed harmful.
Access and Availability
Users can change Alexa's personality style through voice commands on an Echo device (e.g., "Alexa, change your personality style") or by accessing the "Personality Style" feature within the Alexa app's Device Settings. The new personality modes are compatible with all eight existing Alexa voices, which can be adjusted in the Alexa app under Devices > Settings > General > Alexa’s Voice.
Alexa+ is included for Amazon Prime subscribers and is available for $19.99 per month for non-Prime users.
Broader Industry Context
The introduction of these diverse personality styles is part of Amazon's broader strategy to enhance the customizability of Alexa+ as it evolves for the generative AI era. This approach aligns with a trend observed across the AI industry, where companies are exploring different tones and personas to increase user engagement and personalization.
Previous discussions within the AI community have addressed the complexities of infusing AI with personality, including reports of users developing dependencies or experiencing exacerbated mental health issues with other AI models, according to various allegations. Companies like OpenAI have also launched features, such as those introduced in December, allowing ChatGPT users to adjust the AI's base style and tone, including warmth and enthusiasm. Amazon has indicated that these styles are the initial offerings, with additional options planned for future release.
