Flanagan Addresses "Unwarranted" Backlash Over Son Kyle's Selection

St. George-Illawarra Dragons coach Shane Flanagan has spoken out regarding the significant emotional toll and public backlash he and his family have endured since he began coaching his son, Kyle Flanagan, at the club.

The criticism specifically concerns Kyle's selection, particularly for the No.6 jersey in the upcoming Las Vegas match against the Bulldogs.

Flanagan described the online abuse directed at his son as "unwarranted," stating that Kyle's consistent presence in the team has led to this negativity.

Defending Kyle's Performance

The coach strongly defended Kyle's place in the squad, emphasizing his son's dedication and skill. Flanagan asserted that Kyle has demonstrated strong effort, describing him as "one of the team's best players last year."

He also highlighted that his assistant coaches, including Mick Ennis and Dean Young, are in full support of the decision to play Kyle.

"Kyle has demonstrated strong effort... one of the team's best players last year."

Family Bears the Brunt of Criticism

Flanagan expressed that he is more concerned about the impact of the criticism on his family than on himself. He noted that the abuse particularly affects his wife, Kyle's wife, and his sisters.

He acknowledged that while such commentary can contribute to the game's commercial value, it comes with a substantial personal cost.

Heightened Mental Health Awareness

The experiences have also heightened Flanagan's awareness regarding the mental health of young players in professional sports. He underscored the critical importance of supporting players' mental well-being, especially given the intense pressures and negative social media interactions prevalent in today's sporting landscape.

The Dragons are scheduled to play against the Bulldogs on Sunday, March 1, at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
