Arrest Made in 30-Year-Old Murder of American Tourist in Germany

German police announced on Wednesday the arrest of an 81-year-old suspect in connection with the sexual assault and murder of an American woman over 30 years prior.

The Unsolved Crime of Amy Lopez

The victim, 24-year-old American tourist Amy Lopez from Texas, was found deceased in 1994 near Ehrenbreitstein Fortress in Koblenz. Her body, partially nude and with severe head wounds, was discovered by children. The Koblenz Public Prosecutor's Office stated she had been strangled, struck on the head with a stone, and stabbed multiple times, leading to her death.

DNA Breakthrough Reopens Cold Case

The case remained unsolved for decades until advances in DNA technology allowed police to reopen the investigation. Chief Public Prosecutor Manfred Mannweiler noted that current methods were not available in 1994. Investigators re-examined Lopez's clothing, analyzing approximately 1,600 samples.

In 2024, a 2,500 euro reward was offered for information after a male DNA trace was identified. The case also received additional tips after being featured on the true crime program "Aktenzeichen XY" last year.

Suspect Identified Through Existing DNA

The arrested man's DNA was on file from a 1999 conviction for attempted rape of a 16-year-old girl in Koblenz, for which he served a seven-year sentence. Although his genetic data was later deleted, police obtained a new saliva sample from him. This sample matched a DNA trace found inside Lopez's jeans.

Relief and Dedication to Justice

Prosecutor Mannweiler expressed relief regarding the potential resolution of the case. Lopez's father was informed of the arrest on Monday.

Mannweiler emphasized that law enforcement pursues unsolved serious crimes, stating they are not forgotten, even after decades.

Senior detective Friederike Manheller-Sander confirmed that a unit dedicated to cold cases was formed last August. The suspect is currently in pretrial detention in Rhineland-Palatinate on suspicion of premeditated murder.
