Taylor Tomlinson Reflects on Her Career and New Netflix Special "Prodigal Daughter"
Taylor Tomlinson, a stand-up comedian, reflected on her career, which spans half her life as she is now 32. Her fourth Netflix special, "Prodigal Daughter," premiered on February 24.
Evolution of Religious Material
Tomlinson discussed the evolution of her religious comedy material. She stated that her current approach in "Prodigal Daughter" is more nuanced, playful, and affectionate compared to her earlier jokes, which she described as "pretty unforgiving."
She noted that her team had initial apprehensions about her leaning heavily into religious themes for the special and tour, primarily from a marketing perspective.
Tomlinson clarified that her past religious jokes stemmed from a "wounded place" due to her upbringing, and she has since processed much of that resentment.
Early Career and Challenges
Tomlinson began performing as a Christian comic at age 16. Her early sets included jokes about her youth, and she acknowledged they were not polished. She explained that her limited options for performing venues at that age included churches, school fundraisers, and corporate events. This experience taught her about diverse income streams for comedians and contributed to stronger writing skills due to the necessity of performing "clean" material.
Regarding difficult audiences, Tomlinson identified cruise ships as particularly challenging because attendees view the show as a free activity.
She also noted that church audiences, while generally supportive, demand "insanely clean" content. Tomlinson spoke about the financial challenge of transitioning away from the church circuit, where she could earn significant amounts for short sets, even at a young age.
Setting Boundaries and "After Midnight"
As her profile increased, Tomlinson made the decision to remove certain jokes about a family relationship from her sets, even though they were well-received. She stated that this choice stemmed from personal discomfort and a growing confidence to choose her material.
Tomlinson discussed her decision to depart from CBS's late-night show "After Midnight" before its cancellation.
She cited the inability to sustain both hosting duties and her touring schedule, compounded by personal health issues, as the reason.
She expressed regret over the show's end, highlighting its potential as a panel format and its value as an opportunity for other comedians. Tomlinson stated that not returning for a third season was the most difficult professional decision she has made.
Hypothetical Job Exchange
When asked about trading jobs with someone in the entertainment industry for a day, Tomlinson considered Greta Gerwig, expressing interest in Gerwig's work on the Narnia project. She also mentioned wanting to experience what it feels like to be a singer.
