Tecno Unveils Modular Phone Concept with Magnetic Interconnection Technology
Chinese smartphone manufacturer Tecno has introduced a Modular Phone concept, named 'Modular Magnetic Interconnection Technology concept,' ahead of MWC 2026. This initiative aims to revive the modular smartphone concept, a design philosophy previously explored by Google's ambitious Project Ara.

Design and Functionality
Tecno's design centers on a 'Modular Smartphone Ecosystem' that employs ultra-thin magnetic architecture. The core device boasts a remarkable thickness of just 4.9mm. For comparison, when a 4.5mm power bank module is attached, the combined thickness remains comparable to contemporary flagship smartphones.
The concept utilizes magnetic attachments for its various modules. These modules connect to the core phone wirelessly via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and mmWave technologies. This approach primarily integrates accessory-level functionality rather than allowing the swapping of core phone components, differentiating it from Project Ara's method.

Module Ecosystem and Aesthetics
Tecno presented two distinct design themes for the concept: the ATOM edition and the MODA edition. The ATOM edition features a sleek silver-aluminum body complemented by red accents, while the MODA edition is described as having a 'geek-inspired' aesthetic. The device's rear surface is cleverly segmented into eight modular zones, designed to facilitate the easy placement of various accessories.
The initial ecosystem for this concept includes approximately ten distinct modules. These range from an Action Camera, ideal for content creation, to a Telephoto Lens that cleverly uses the phone screen as a viewfinder, and even tools for off-grid communication.
The stated goal is to enable users to select and carry only the hardware modules required for specific daily tasks, offering flexibility beyond fixed factory specifications.
Availability and Project Status
As is customary with MWC concept introductions, Tecno has not provided a specific release date or pricing for a potential commercial version of this device. The company frames this concept as a 'long-term design thinking' project. This indicates its potential future integration into products, but without immediate commercialization plans currently in place.
