Melbourne Airport Rail Link Kicks Off First Construction Stage

The Melbourne Airport Rail Link (MARL) project has commenced its first construction stage between West Footscray and Albion. This crucial phase includes groundbreaking efforts by both the Federal and Victorian governments.

Sunshine Station is set for extensive technical and structural upgrades as a central part of this initiative. The $4.1 billion joint investment aims to significantly improve the rail network's complexity and transform Sunshine into a vital transport hub, connecting regional, metropolitan, and airport services.

Project Scope and Key Works

The project encompasses significant civil and rail engineering works designed to alleviate existing bottlenecks and prepare the corridor for the Metro Tunnel and eventual Melton Line electrification.

Key Technical Components:

  • Construction of six kilometers of new track and the realignment of existing passenger and freight lines.
  • Building two new rail bridges and expanding the Sunshine Station concourse.
  • Adding two new regional platforms at Sunshine to facilitate seamless transfers between regional Victoria and the airport.
  • Comprehensive signaling upgrades to support increased service frequency.

In addition to these major rail works, the Victorian Government is investing $143 million in precinct-wide improvements, focusing on multi-modal connectivity and urban renewal around Sunshine Station.

Network Integration and Future Vision

The upgrades at Sunshine Station are intended to centralize the state's rail network. This strategic integration of the Sunbury Line, key regional services (Bendigo, Ballarat, Geelong), and future airport trains is expected to reduce travel times and significantly enhance network resilience.

Victorian Minister for Transport Infrastructure, Gabrielle Williams, stated that rebuilding Sunshine Station marks the first stage of the Melbourne Airport Rail and will support more services in Melbourne's west.

Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Catherine King, noted that the upgrades at Sunshine would improve transportation for regional cities.

Early designs for the Sunshine interchange have already been released. Construction for the new Tottenham Station is scheduled for 2027. Community consultation regarding open spaces and precinct designs remains ongoing through the Engage Victoria portal.
