MS Australia to Visit Parliament House Advocating for Research and Funding

MS Australia is scheduled to visit Parliament House next week to engage with the Parliamentary Friends of Multiple Sclerosis Group. The visit aims to address three primary objectives.

The upcoming visit by MS Australia to Parliament House seeks to advance critical initiatives related to research, recognition, and government investment in multiple sclerosis.

Key Objectives of the Visit

The delegation will focus on the following core areas:

  • Research Grant Outcomes: MS Australia will announce the results of its annual research grant rounds. This continues the organization's significant commitment to funding research aimed at treating, preventing, and ultimately curing MS. This vital investment is made possible through the generous support of donors, MS Member Organisations, corporate sponsors, and various fundraising events, including the forthcoming May 50K.

  • Researcher Recognition: The event will serve to acknowledge the invaluable contributions of MS researchers to advancements in treatments and cures. Participants will wear distinctive red lab coats to symbolize the profound significance of their scientific work.

  • Advocacy for Government Investment: A central focus will be to emphasize the necessity of ongoing government funding for health and medical research. This is particularly crucial through the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF). MS Australia specifically advocates for a ten-year Neurological Research Mission to be funded via the MRFF. This proposal has been thoroughly detailed in submissions to the Federal Budget by both MS Australia and Neurological Alliance Australia.

Speakers and Participants

A distinguished group of speakers and participants will be present at the event. Speakers include Senators Deborah O’Neill and Wendy Askew, who co-chair the Parliamentary Friends of MS Group. Also scheduled to speak are Renee Coffey MP, who lives with MS, and Dr. Monique Ryan MP, a paediatric neurologist. Dr. Ryan will specifically address her strong support for fully funding medical research through the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF).
