"Overwatch Rush" is a top-down multiplayer hero shooter set in the Overwatch universe, currently in early development for mobile platforms.
Development Overview
Overwatch Rush is being developed by a dedicated internal team at Blizzard Entertainment, with Source 1 specifying Blizzard's Barcelona team. This initiative is part of Blizzard's broader strategy to expand its major franchises into the mobile market, following titles such as Diablo Immortal and Warcraft Rumble. The game is designed as a mobile-first experience, distinct from a direct port of existing Overwatch titles, and is slated for launch on both Android and iOS platforms. Blizzard has stated its intent to expand the Overwatch universe and committed to providing updates on the game's progress.
Gameplay Features
The game is a top-down twin-stick shooter, designed for fast-paced, mobile-specific sessions with two teams of four players. Controls are touchscreen-based, featuring tap and hold buttons for abilities, a virtual analog stick for movement, and a secondary directional stick for primary fire. Controller support is not included. While the game incorporates a degree of auto-aim, it is designed with a high skill ceiling. Matches are concise, typically lasting under five minutes, and emphasize hero-centric combat. The art style is cartoonish, intended to enhance readability on smaller screens.
Heroes and Customization
Hero Roster & AdaptationsThe initial launch roster includes Tracer, Reinhardt, Kiriko, Soldier: 76, Lucio, Pharah, Mercy, and Reaper. Some heroes have undergone specific adaptations for the mobile platform. For example, Mercy's primary fire uses her blaster, and her Blessing ability can be self-cast or applied to an ally for simultaneous damage and healing. She also has a directional boost for repositioning and can fly alongside airborne heroes. Mercy's ultimate ability has been reworked into a damage and healing aura affecting proximate players.
Progression & LoadoutsPlayers cannot swap heroes mid-match, but loadouts can be changed. Progression involves earning mastery levels for heroes, which unlock Mods and Talents.
- Mods: Minor improvements like decreased ability cooldowns or bonus health.
- Talents: More significant changes, such as Reinhardt's Fire Strike creating a fiery tornado or Tracer's Recall granting overhealth.
Game Modes and Monetization
Overwatch Rush will feature multiple game modes, including Control Point and Nano Grab. In Nano Grab, two teams compete to collect 100 green tokens, called Nanos, and deposit them in temporary banks. Opponents drop Nanos when eliminated. As a free-to-play title, the game will include cosmetic rewards, similar to the series' loot box system.
Future Outlook
The game is currently in early development. Regional testing is planned to refine gameplay balance, server performance, and monetization systems. A specific release date has not yet been announced.
