YouTube Premium Lite Gains Background Playback, Offline Downloads

YouTube is incorporating background playback and offline downloads into its YouTube Premium Lite subscription service, which costs $7.99 per month.

This update will allow users to continue playing YouTube videos while using other applications and save videos for offline viewing.

Enhanced Features Respond to User Demand

YouTube Premium Lite was initially introduced approximately one year ago as a more affordable option for ad-reduced viewing. Crucially, it did not include background playback or offline downloads at its launch. YouTube confirmed that the decision to add these functionalities came after receiving significant user feedback requesting their inclusion.

The new features began rolling out on Tuesday. They are expected to be available in all regions where Premium Lite is offered within the coming weeks.
