NFL Rule Discussions
The NFL will not discuss a proposal to ban the "tush push" play during the current offseason. The deadline for teams to submit such a proposal to the Competition Committee passed without any submissions.
Aiding Ball Carriers Reviewed
NFL executive vice president of football operations, Troy Vincent, stated that the Competition Committee has reviewed other methods by which offensive players assist ball carriers. These include instances where players are seen pulling or carrying teammates, referencing plays involving Christian McCaffrey and Josh Allen.
"We talked about aiding the runner... We saw players being literally picked up and kind of walked into the end zone."
Vincent clarified that these discussions do not pertain to the "tush push" itself, where players push from behind the ball carrier.
Existing Rule Enforcement Under Review
A current rule prohibits pulling a runner or "grasping a teammate or by using his hands or arms to encircle the body of a teammate in an effort to block an opponent." This rule is not currently enforced. Future discussions could lead to this rule becoming a point of emphasis for officials in the 2026 season.
