Prime Minister Albanese Evacuated from The Lodge
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was evacuated from The Lodge, his official residence in Canberra, following an alleged security incident. The incident prompted a significant police operation, and Mr. Albanese was relocated for several hours.
Australian Federal Police Response
The Australian Federal Police (AFP) confirmed that it responded to an "alleged security incident" at approximately 6 PM. A comprehensive search of the protection establishment was conducted, and no suspicious items were found.
The AFP stated there was no current threat to the community or public safety.
The AFP is responsible for safeguarding federal parliamentarians and Commonwealth buildings, including The Lodge and Parliament House. A spokesperson for the Prime Minister commented, "We trust the AFP to do their jobs and thank them for their work." The AFP indicated that additional details would be released later.
Context of Increased Threats
The incident occurs amid a period of increased threats targeting federal politicians. In mid-2024, the AFP reported that threats to federal politicians' safety had doubled over the preceding two years. Earlier in February, a 33-year-old Melbourne man was charged with allegedly making death threats and antisemitic comments to a federal Member of Parliament via social media and email between January 16 and 18.
Following these incidents, Mr. Albanese noted that security arrangements for federal politicians are under constant review. He stated that the number of threats against elected representatives has substantially increased, highlighting a need to investigate the underlying causes of this trend.
