Australian authorities have reported the arrest of 32 individuals in connection with climate protests at the Port of Newcastle, one of the world's largest coal export facilities.
The arrests occurred on Saturday and early Sunday. All 32 individuals were charged with "marine-related" offenses by New South Wales state police.
Police further indicated that several activists engaged in "unsafe practices" on the water during the demonstrations.
The climate activist organization Rising Tide claimed responsibility for the protest action. The group stated that hundreds of its activists entered the harbour's shipping lane in kayaks, asserting that the protest resulted in the halting of two cargo ships.
