Chester Returns to Cowboys After ACL Rupture

Tom Chester is scheduled to play his first game for the Cowboys since September 2024, marking a significant return from injury.

Chester sustained an ACL rupture during the 2025 pre-season, which necessitated a year-long recovery period. He will start in the centres for the team's match against Newcastle at Allegiant Stadium, stepping in for Zac Laybutt who is serving a two-week suspension.

Coach Payten Expects Immediate Impact

Cowboys coach Todd Payten expressed confidence in Chester's comeback, anticipating a strong performance. Payten stated that Chester is expected to have an an immediate impact despite the extended absence, noting his progress in training after a minor setback.

Another key returnee is Heilum Luki, who also recovered from an ACL injury during the 2025 season. Luki is set to start in the back-row after a successful pre-season return.

Cowboys Lineup Confirmed for Vegas Showdown

The Cowboys have also confirmed key positions for the upcoming game. Jake Clifford has been named as the Cowboys' five-eighth, partnering Tom Dearden, while Jaxon Purdue will play in the centres.

North Queensland is scheduled to compete against a Newcastle team led by captain Kalyn Ponga at Allegiant Stadium.

This highly anticipated fixture is part of the NRL's season-opening event in Las Vegas. Meanwhile, Matt Burton has also been cleared to start for the Bulldogs in their own season-opening event in the same city.
