Mosque Defaced and Set Ablaze Near Nablus Amid Rising West Bank Tensions

An Israeli settler attack reportedly targeted the Abu Bakr as-Siddiq Mosque on Monday, located between Sarra and Tal, near Nablus in the northern West Bank. Worshippers arriving for morning prayers discovered the mosque defaced with graffiti and a smoldering fire at its entrance.

Details of the Attack

The incident involved two individuals, captured on security camera footage, approaching the mosque with gasoline or petrol and spray paint. They departed a few minutes later, leaving behind significant damage.

Munir Ramdan, a nearby resident, provided details from the surveillance footage.

Attackers spray-painted phrases such as "revenge" and "price tag" on the mosque walls, along with graffiti denigrating the Prophet Muhammad.

Escalating Violence in the West Bank

This mosque attack unfolds against a backdrop of increased Israeli settler and military actions across the West Bank, coinciding with the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip.

Since October 2023, at least 1,094 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces and settlers in the West Bank, according to United Nations data.

Last week, a UN Human Rights Council report highlighted that Israeli policies in the West Bank, including the "systematic unlawful use of force by Israeli security forces" and home demolitions, contribute to the displacement of Palestinian communities. The report described these actions, combined with settler violence, as creating a "coercive environment" that induces forced displacement.

This forced displacement was characterized as a war crime, with concerns raised about "ethnic cleansing" aimed at altering the demographic composition of the occupied West Bank.

Calls for Accountability and Allegations of Impunity

Salem Ishtayeh, a resident of Tal, stated that the attack was particularly directed at Palestinians observing Ramadan. The Palestinian Authority’s Ministry of Religious Affairs reported a concerning trend: 45 mosques in the West Bank were vandalized or attacked by settlers in the previous year alone.

The Israeli military and police have indicated they are investigating the incident and searching for suspects. However, human rights organizations have voiced strong criticisms.

The Israeli organization B’Tselem has accused Israel of facilitating settler violence as part of a strategy to control Palestinian land.

These organizations assert that Israeli authorities have allowed settlers to act with impunity. The UN also previously warned that settler attacks were carried out "with the acquiescence, support, and in some cases participation, of Israeli security forces."
