Solbar, Sunshine Coast's Iconic Live Music Venue, Set to Close
Solbar, the Sunshine Coast's longest-running live music venue, is scheduled to close this weekend after more than two decades of operation. The venue initially opened in Coolum in 2001 before relocating to Ocean Street in Maroochydore, where it contributed significantly to the development of the street as a vibrant live music and entertainment precinct. Throughout its history, Solbar received the Best Regional Venue in Queensland award three times at the Queensland Music Awards.
After more than two decades, Solbar, the Sunshine Coast's longest-running live music venue and a three-time recipient of the Best Regional Venue in Queensland award, is set to close its doors this weekend.
Reasons for Closure
Owners Alex Johns and Dimitris Limnatitis attributed the closure to high operating costs, changes in audience behavior, and economic pressures. In a statement, they characterized the closure as "the end of a shared creative community" for staff, artists, and patrons. The recent closure of another local music venue, The Station, which concluded its live acts in January, underscores the challenges facing the industry.
Industry Impact and Legacy
The announcement of Solbar's closure has elicited numerous tributes from artists and industry professionals. Natalee Johns from the band Hugo and the Hive acknowledged Solbar's supportive role for emerging artists, specifically mentioning entertainment manager Melissa O'Bryan's contributions to fostering youth involvement in music. Marketing manager Katie Mateus, who was with the venue for 12 years, described Solbar as a significant community space.
Co-owner Dimitris Limnatitis expressed pride in the venue's legacy, highlighting its crucial role in providing a platform for artists to begin their careers.
Solbar's final event is scheduled for February 28.
