Lily Collins Cast as Audrey Hepburn in "Breakfast at Tiffany's" Production Film
Lily Collins has been cast to portray Audrey Hepburn in an upcoming film focused on the production of the iconic 1961 romantic comedy Breakfast at Tiffany’s. The untitled project is based on Sam Wasson’s nonfiction book, Fifth Avenue, 5 AM: Audrey Hepburn, Breakfast at Tiffany’s and the Dawn of the Modern Woman, with a screenplay adaptation by Alena Smith.
Collins confirmed her involvement, noting that the role follows nearly a decade of development and a "lifetime of admiration and adoration for Audrey."
Film Details Unveiled
The project is being developed by Collins' own Case Study Films, Imagine Entertainment, and producer Scott LaStaiti.
The film aims to provide a comprehensive account of the 1961 movie's creation. It will cover aspects from its pre-production challenges to on-set incidents, including a reported near-electrocution during filming outside the Tiffany & Co store. It will also explore the cultural context of the late 1950s and the involvement of key figures such as author Truman Capote, costume designer Edith Head, and director Blake Edwards.
Producers for the film include Brian Grazer, Jeb Brody, and Justin Wilkes for Imagine Entertainment. Lily Collins, Charlie McDowell, and Alex Orlovsky will produce for Case Study Films alongside Scott LaStaiti. Executive producers are Marc Gilbar, Sam Wasson, Brandon Millan, Michael Shamberg, and Joyce Choi.
"Breakfast at Tiffany's" Retrospective
The 1961 film Breakfast at Tiffany’s was an adaptation of Truman Capote’s 1958 novella. The film loosely interpreted the original story, relocating it to 1960 and altering the novella’s unnamed gay narrator to a straight character.
Adaptation & Casting Challenges
Capote's preferred choice for the role of Holly Golightly was Marilyn Monroe, who was unavailable. Shirley MacLaine and Kim Novak also declined the part. Hepburn was subsequently cast, a decision Capote publicly criticized, calling it "the most miscast film I’ve ever seen." Prior to its release, Paramount Pictures’ publicity department sought to portray Golightly as a virtuous character.
Critical Acclaim & Legacy
The film garnered critical success, grossing US$14 million globally (approximately $152 million in current value). It was nominated for five Academy Awards and won two: Best Score for Henry Mancini and Best Song for "Moon River," performed by Hepburn. In 2012, Breakfast at Tiffany’s was added to the U.S. National Film Registry, cementing its cultural significance.
Audrey Hepburn, who received an Oscar for Roman Holiday, also starred in other iconic films such as Sabrina and Funny Face.
