Cowboys Set to Franchise Tag George Pickens
Cowboys wide receiver George Pickens, identified as the No. 1 player on PFT’s list of top free agents, is not expected to enter the open market next month.
The Cowboys intend to use their franchise tag on Pickens. Executive Vice President Stephen Jones stated on Monday that this move will be finalized within the next week.
"We think the world of him. We want him here."
Utilizing the franchise tag will prevent Pickens from becoming a free agent and will extend the period for the team and player to negotiate a long-term contract until July. Jones did not provide a timeline for securing a long-term agreement. He also indicated uncertainty regarding Pickens' attendance at offseason workouts if he plays under the tag.
"We always want guys here. We’ve franchised players before, obviously we want him here working with the team. It will work itself out in the coming weeks."
Financial Implications
The franchise tag for wide receivers includes a fully guaranteed 2026 salary and a cap hit exceeding $28 million. A long-term deal would reduce this cap number, but it remains to be determined if an agreement will be reached.
