James Milner Sets New Premier League Appearance Record

View source

James Milner has set a new Premier League appearance record, making his 654th appearance in Brighton & Hove Albion's 2-0 victory over Brentford on Saturday. This achievement surpasses the previous record of 653 games held by Gareth Barry, a former teammate.

Career Overview

Milner's Premier League career began in 2002 with Leeds United when he was 16 years old. He subsequently played for Newcastle, Aston Villa, Manchester City, and spent eight years at Liverpool before joining Brighton on a free transfer in 2023. He has also earned 61 caps for England.

Overcoming Injury

Approximately 18 months prior to setting this record, Milner sustained a career-threatening injury during a 1-1 draw against Arsenal. Complications from knee surgery, including nerve damage, left him unable to lift his foot or toes, leading to a nearly nine-month recovery period.

He described the recovery process as challenging, particularly the inability to move his foot despite straining.

His return to play was as an 89th-minute substitute in Brighton's 4-1 win at Tottenham Hotspur in May of the previous year.

Teammate and Club Perspectives

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, a former Liverpool and England teammate, noted Milner's versatility, consistent fitness, and strong willpower.

Former Brighton academy coach Vic Bragg described Milner's influence on young players, citing an instance with Jack Hinshelwood.

Brighton chief executive Paul Barber stated that Milner consistently demands and maintains high standards, offers advice, and demonstrates significant fitness, attitude, desire, and hunger at 40 years of age.

Milner had reportedly expressed a desire for the team's focus to remain on European qualification rather than his personal record.

Milner signed a one-year contract extension with Brighton last June. Head coach Fabian Hurzeler has expressed a desire for him to remain for the next season, and Barber indicated that Milner is likely to continue playing as long as he believes he can contribute at the highest level.
