Aula Energy Acquires Lightsource bp's Australian Solar Portfolio

Aula Energy, a renewable energy company originating from Macquarie, has acquired Lightsource bp's solar and storage portfolio in Australia. This strategic acquisition includes 1 gigawatt (GW) of operational photovoltaic (PV) projects and provides options to develop up to 800 megawatts (MW) of co-located battery energy storage systems (BESS).

Lightsource bp reportedly sought a buyer for these assets as its parent company, bp, re-evaluated its global strategy, including a pivot back to fossil fuels.

Acquired Assets and Storage Potential

The acquired solar farms are located across multiple states in Australia:

  • West Wyalong, Wellington, and Wellington North in New South Wales.
  • Wunghnu in Victoria.
  • Woolooga in Queensland.

Each of these solar projects offers the potential for the development of a co-located BESS.

Strengthening Aula's Renewable Footprint

This acquisition complements Aula Energy's existing portfolio, which is largely comprised of wind and battery projects. The company is currently developing the Boulder Creek wind farm in central Queensland and the Carmody’s Hill wind farm in South Australia, with plans for a co-located battery at the latter. Additionally, Aula has partnered with Green Wind Renewables to develop up to 2.4 GW of large-scale wind farms in Western Australia.

Aula CEO Chad Hymas commented that the acquisition represents a significant step in the company's growth. He added that it strengthens Aula's ability to support Australia's energy transition and create long-term value. Hymas also stated that operations at the acquired solar farms would continue without disruption, with a focus on maintaining communication with stakeholders.
