Disney's The Lion King Roars Back to Sydney

The musical production of Disney's The Lion King is set to return to the Sydney stage, opening at the Capitol Theatre on April 18. This highly anticipated run marks the third time the musical will be staged in Sydney, following previous showings in October 2003 and December 2013.

Meet the Cast

Aphiwe Nyezi as Simba

Aphiwe Nyezi, who grew up in South Africa, will play the iconic role of Simba. Nyezi stated that he was introduced to the musical later in life through a friend who was already performing in the show. He expressed happiness about inspiring others through his travel and performance in the musical.

Nick Afoa as Mufasa

Nick Afoa, born and raised in New Zealand, will portray Mufasa. Afoa previously played Simba 13 years ago, marking his theatrical debut. He stated that he felt an affinity with Mufasa even when he played Simba.

Afoa noted the importance of being present for the audience, acknowledging that for some, it might be their first or last theatre experience.

Buyi Zama Returns as Rafiki

Buyi Zama will reprise her role as Rafiki, marking her third time in the Sydney production, having also performed in the 2003 and 2013 tours. Zama, originally from South Africa, now resides in Perth and will bring her seven-year-old daughter to see the production for the first time. Zama led a performance of "The Circle of Life" during rehearsals and described the show as a family event.

Rehearsals Underway and Global Legacy

Rehearsals for the upcoming production commenced on Monday at Parramatta's Riverside Theatres.

The Lion King musical has been seen by over 127 million people globally since its Broadway premiere on November 13, 1997, and has received multiple awards including Tonys and a Grammy.
