China's Box Office Leads Globally Amid Spring Festival Surge
China's total box office revenue for 2024 reached $970 million, surpassing North America and temporarily ranking first among single markets worldwide. This information was reported by Maoyan, a Chinese movie-ticketing and film data platform.
On February 19, Deadline Hollywood, an online outlet covering the US entertainment industry, highlighted that movies from China were expected to dominate the global box office during the Spring Festival weekend.
Spring Festival Box Office Highlights
The Spring Festival sales chart was led by "Pegasus 3," with other Chinese New Year release films including "Scare Out," "Boonie Bears: The Hidden Protector," "Blades of the Guardians," and "Panda Plan: The Magical Tribe."
Anthony D'Alessandro of Deadline Hollywood noted that "Pegasus 3" grossed $219.5 million in its first three days of the Chinese Spring Festival holiday. Gower projected that this film would ultimately claim the top spot in the Chinese Spring Festival box office.
Gower projected that "Pegasus 3" would ultimately claim the top spot in the Chinese Spring Festival box office with $400 million.
If "Pegasus 3" maintains its lead, it would mark the first time the "Pegasus" series has won the Chinese New Year box office championship. The first installment, "Pegasus" (2019), was outperformed by "The Wandering Earth," and "Pegasus 2" (2024) was surpassed by Jia Ling's "YOLO."
Pegasus 3: Narrative and Technical Excellence
In "Pegasus 3," the character Zhang Chi receives an invitation from the corporation SKYLAD to form a national team for the Asian Muchen 100 Rally. The narrative involves selecting drivers for a "Chinese team" through a process later exposed as a pretense, with predetermined finalists favoring sponsors.
Zhang Chi, along with partners Yu Qiang and Ji Xing, and with assistance from Lin Zhendong and Manager Ye, proceeds to enter the race as independent drivers. They ultimately achieve the championship.
The film's racing scenes exceed 45 minutes, a notable increase from the roughly 25-minute climactic sequence in the second film. The Muchen 100 Rally in "Pegasus 3" features all drivers starting simultaneously, allows for choice between two paths, and includes a variety of surfaces such as asphalt, gravel, and Gobi desert. The race sequences depict intense competition, overtakes, and aerial jumps.
Updated Spring Festival Box Office Tally
As of 10:35 pm on February 21, the total box office for the Chinese Spring Festival period had reached 4.474 billion yuan ($647.4 million).
The top-performing films were:
- "Pegasus 3" led with nearly 2.329 billion yuan.
- The spy thriller "Scare Out" ranked second with 712 million yuan.
- "Blades of the Guardians" claimed third place with 589 million yuan.
- "Boonie Bears: The Hidden Protector" held fourth with 570 million yuan.
Evolving Chinese Audience Preferences
Deadline Hollywood, in its coverage of the Chinese Spring Festival box office, cited sources suggesting that Chinese audience moviegoing preferences are changing rapidly.
Audiences are "embracing more Hollywood-style local titles with broad stories," offering rich narratives and excellent visual effects.
This observation was made in the context of several Hollywood films experiencing major box office challenges in the Chinese market in recent years, with "Zootopia 2" being a notable exception.
