Melbourne Zoo Welcomes Four Snow Leopard Cubs

View source

Melbourne Zoo has announced the birth of four snow leopard cubs to nine-year-old mother Miska and ten-year-old father Kang Ju. The cubs were born on January 15, marking the first snow leopard births at the zoo since 2020. Miska and her cubs are currently in a private den and are expected to be visible to the public around April.

A Significant Birth for a Vulnerable Species

Snow leopards are categorized as a vulnerable species.

Laura Weiner, Manager of Carnivores and Ungulates at Melbourne Zoo, stated that litters typically include two or three cubs, making a litter of four slightly above average.

Developing Personalities and Dedicated Motherhood

Observations indicate that the cubs display distinct personalities, identified by their unique markings. Miska, who is raising her second litter, is exhibiting appropriate maternal behaviors, including nursing and grooming. As snow leopards are solitary animals, Miska will raise the cubs alone for about two years, while Kang Ju resides in a separate habitat.

Future Plans: Vaccinations, Naming, and Public Debut

The sex of the cubs is currently unknown and will be determined during their first vaccinations, which are scheduled in approximately one month. A naming competition will be organized for Zoos Victoria members. The cubs will be introduced to their public habitat once they have grown sufficiently.
