Apocalypse Now: "Napalm" vs. "Charlie Don't Surf"

The Iconic "Napalm" Line

The line “I love the smell of napalm in the morning” from the 1979 film Apocalypse Now, spoken by Robert Duvall as Lt. Col. Bill Kilgore, is frequently cited as one of cinema’s most memorable. The accompanying photograph featured Robert Duvall.

Critical Acclaim and Cultural Impact

Film critic Roger Ebert described the line as “Unforgettable” in his 1999 review, commending Duvall’s portrayal of “frightening emptiness.”

The Australian Museum of Screen Culture identified it as one of the most iconic lines in cinema history, noting its representation of the Vietnam War's immorality and absurdity, embodied by Kilgore.

The line holds the #12 position on the American Film Institute’s list of the Top 100 most memorable lines in a century.

An Alternative Perspective: "Charlie Don't Surf"

Despite this widespread recognition, the article contends that the line “Charlie don’t surf” more accurately captures the essence and irony of the film’s iconic scene.

The Scene's Absurd Absurdity

The cinematic sequence involves military intelligence agent Willard’s mission to assassinate a rogue Green Beret colonel. He is escorted by Lt. Colonel Bill Kilgore’s Air Cavalry unit. Among Willard’s crew is Lance Johnson, a renowned surfer.

Kilgore, also an enthusiastic surfer, discovers a “fantastic peak” for surfing at a Viet Cong stronghold, Vin Drin Dop, despite its hazardous nature. Kilgore then plans an assault on the village, intending to allow his soldiers to surf the waves after the area is secured.

Screenwriter's Preference and Director's Endorsement

Screenwriter John Milius confirmed that surfing was integral to his eleven drafts of Apocalypse Now, specifically highlighting the outrageousness of these scenes.

Milius stated that “Charlie don’t surf” was his favorite line and likely the best he ever wrote, expressing surprise that it made the final cut.

Director Steven Spielberg also identified “When Kilgore says ‘Charlie don’t surf’” as one of John Milius’s most classic lines.
