Giancarlo Italiano Resigns as Wellington Phoenix Men's Head Coach

Giancarlo Italiano has resigned as the men’s head coach of Wellington Phoenix. The announcement was made in his post-match media conference following a devastating 5-0 derby defeat to Auckland FC.

Reasons for Departure

Italiano stated he takes full responsibility for the significant loss, describing it as unacceptable.

He believes it is in the club's best interest to bring in a new leader with more energy to refocus the team and maintain the season's momentum.

Italiano's Journey with the Phoenix

Italiano joined Wellington Phoenix in 2019, initially as an analyst and second assistant coach to Ufuk Talay, before becoming lead assistant.

He assumed the role of head coach in 2023, guiding the team to their best-ever A-League campaign in his inaugural season, where they narrowly missed the premiers’ plate and a grand final spot.

Reflecting on His Tenure

He expressed confidence in leaving the club in an improved state, citing achievements in developing young players, facilitating record transfers during his tenure, and establishing a recognizable playing style. Italiano acknowledged that while consistency was sometimes an issue, the team demonstrated high-quality football at its best.

Italiano concluded by expressing respect for the club, acknowledging its role in his professional development, and reiterating that in football, changes are necessary when efforts are not yielding desired results.
