Gold Coast Toddler with Rare Cancer Seeks Overseas Treatment

A 20-month-old toddler from the Gold Coast has been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. Her family is seeking to access specialized overseas treatment.

Goldie began losing motor skills, progressing from near-first steps to an inability to bear weight. Concerns raised by the family regarding her condition and requests for medical imaging were not addressed for several months.

Goldie was eventually hospitalized due to critical illness. Scans revealed a large tumor compressing nerves in her spine. Maddison Bennett, Goldie's mother, stated that her daughter was diagnosed with an aggressive and rare form of cancer located in her spine and pelvis.

The specific diagnosis was extra-cranial malignant rhabdoid tumor, identified before Goldie's second birthday. She underwent emergency spinal surgery. Goldie has completed four rounds of chemotherapy and requires radiation therapy.

According to Bennett, radiation therapy for a 20-month-old child is intensive and carries potential lifelong consequences. The family is seeking specialized treatment not available in Australia. The rarity of Goldie's condition has reportedly led to delays in accessing overseas treatment due to health system procedures.

The family believes they have experienced a lack of support and are proceeding independently to secure the necessary care.

Goldie requires specialized proton therapy in Singapore next month. Proton therapy is described as an advanced radiation technique that targets the tumor more precisely, reducing exposure to healthy tissue.

The family has initiated a fundraiser to cover the costs of treatment, travel, accommodation, and medical insurance. Bennett expressed that Goldie warrants every opportunity for treatment.
