Google Shifts Android Weather to Search, Pixels Get Accessibility Boost

Google is implementing changes to how Android users access weather information, primarily by integrating the default weather experience for non-Pixel devices directly into Google Search results. Concurrently, the dedicated Pixel Weather app is set to receive an update focused on enhancing accessibility through redesigned icons and user interface elements.

Android Weather Experience Shifts to Google Search

Google is replacing the previous dedicated weather interface for many Android devices with a Google Search results page. This transition, which began several months prior, has recently expanded to a wider user base.

Previous Experience

Prior to this change, Android users without Pixel devices often accessed a full-screen weather application via a homescreen shortcut, typically through the Google app. This interface featured a "Froggy" background and displayed current temperature, high/low, conditions, and "feels like" information. It also provided hourly and 10-day forecasts, which could be expanded for more details. Additional information cards covered metrics such as wind, humidity, UV index, pressure, and sunrise/sunset times.

New Experience

Upon migration, tapping the weather homescreen shortcut now directs users to a Google Search results page for "weather." This redesigned page includes a consolidated "Froggy" card presenting both current conditions and the hourly forecast. It also features an interactive 10-day forecast carousel and expandable sections for precipitation, wind, humidity, and a newly added air quality index. Google's AI Overviews may also provide a summary of current weather conditions on this page.

For users who have transitioned, the "View all details" button that previously opened the full-screen app is no longer available. Graphics for elements such as humidity, wind, and precipitation have been simplified into icons.

Rollout and Scope

The migration has been observed across an increasing number of devices in recent days. While the old weather application is becoming inaccessible for migrated users, the full rollout of this change is ongoing. This change specifically impacts non-Pixel Android devices, which relied on a shortcut within the Google app. Pixel devices, which utilize their own dedicated Pixel Weather app, are not affected by this particular shift. The move aligns with previous actions, such as the removal of the Google Weather app from most Wear OS smartwatches, with the exception of the Pixel Watch.

Pixel Weather App to Receive Accessibility-Focused Redesign

Separate from the broader Android weather transition, the Google Pixel Weather app is preparing to implement an accessibility-focused redesign for its icons and user interface. Screenshots from version 1.1.20251230.875325825 indicate these upcoming changes.

Icon Redesign

The primary purpose of this overhaul is to enhance accessibility, particularly for users with low vision. The updated icons are designed to be entirely flat, contrasting with previous designs that incorporated shadows and gradients. Icons representing elements like the sun and clouds will feature bolder outlines to improve visibility against various backgrounds, while their general shapes are expected to remain consistent.

Additional Changes

Upon the update's release, users will reportedly encounter an introductory splash screen detailing the reasons behind the icon refresh. The upcoming version also includes richer colors for backdrops and other user interface elements, which appear to be further accessibility improvements. Additionally, the app will introduce a new method for reorganizing saved locations, utilizing buttons rather than requiring a drag-and-drop action.
