Google Integrates Android Weather Directly into Search for Non-Pixel Devices
Google has initiated a transition of its Android weather interface for non-Pixel devices, shifting from a standalone application or dedicated fullscreen report to a display within Google Search results. This change, which began several months ago, is now being observed more broadly across a growing number of devices.
The integration replaces the previous dedicated fullscreen weather interface, with users now directed to a redesigned "weather" search page when accessing weather information via their homescreen shortcut.
Accessing Weather: The New Flow
When users on affected Android devices tap their weather homescreen shortcut or a shortcut within the Google app, they are now redirected to a Google Search results page for the term "weather." This fundamentally alters the previous method of accessing a dedicated, full-screen weather application or report.
Crucially, Pixel devices, which utilize a separate Pixel Weather app, and the Pixel Watch, are not impacted by this transition.
The Former Dedicated Weather App
The previous interface offered a dedicated fullscreen weather application. This app was characterized by its familiar "Froggy" background, displaying essential information like current temperature, high/low forecasts, conditions, and "feels like" data.
It also featured distinct, expandable sections for hourly and 10-day forecasts, providing granular details. Additional information cards presented metrics such as wind, humidity, UV index, pressure, and sunrise/sunset times, offering a comprehensive overview.
Introducing the Search-Based Interface
The redesigned Google Search results page for "weather" now presents a consolidated "Froggy" card. This card intelligently combines current conditions with the hourly forecast for a streamlined view. An interactive 10-day forecast carousel is also integrated directly onto the page.
Furthermore, the new interface includes expandable sections for precipitation, wind, and humidity, alongside an incorporated air quality index. Google's AI Overviews may also provide a concise summary of current weather conditions directly on this page.
For users who have received a notification about the weather page moving, the "View all details" button, which previously opened the fullscreen app, is no longer accessible. Visual elements for humidity, wind, and precipitation are now represented by simplified icons, enhancing the page's minimalist design.
Ongoing Rollout and Device Impact
The migration to this new Search-based weather experience has been progressively observed across an increasing number of non-Pixel Android devices. For users who have been migrated, the previous dedicated weather interface is becoming inaccessible. The full rollout of this significant change remains ongoing.
Broader Strategy: Consolidating Weather
This transition appears to be part of a broader strategic initiative by Google. The company aims to consolidate its various weather offerings into a unified, Search-driven platform.
This move also follows the prior removal of the Google Weather app from most Wear OS smartwatches, with the notable exception of the Pixel Watch, further highlighting a focused approach to weather service delivery.
