Universities are increasingly integrating artificial intelligence (AI) across various institutional functions, extending beyond initial concerns about student cheating. This integration encompasses resource allocation, student risk flagging, course scheduling optimization, and administrative automation, fundamentally reshaping higher education operations.
Students and instructors utilize AI tools for tasks such as summarizing, studying, assignment creation, syllabus development, code writing, literature scanning, and research task compression.
Types of AI Systems and Their Implications
Research conducted over eight years by UMass Boston's Applied Ethics Center and the Institute for Ethics and Emerging Technologies has identified three categories of AI systems with distinct impacts on higher education:
Nonautonomous AI
Nonautonomous AI systems automate tasks where a human remains "in the loop."
Examples include software used in admissions, purchasing, academic advising, and institutional risk assessment. These systems can pose significant risks to student privacy and data security, exhibit biases, and often lack transparency regarding their operations or problem sources. Existing university compliance offices and review boards are typically tasked with addressing these risks.
Hybrid AI
Hybrid systems involve generative AI technologies, such as large language models, where human users define overall goals but the system determines intermediate steps. Students use these tools as writing companions, tutors, and explainers, while faculty employ them for generating rubrics, drafting lectures, and designing syllabuses. Researchers leverage them for paper summarization, draft commenting, experiment design, and code generation.
Risks associated with hybrid AI include:
- Transparency: Natural-language interfaces can obscure whether interactions are with human or automated agents, potentially leading to alienation, distraction, and distrust.
- Accountability and Intellectual Credit: The increasing reliance on AI for generating assignments, responses, and feedback raises questions about who is responsible for evaluation and potential misinformation. Clearer norms for authorship and responsibility are needed for both students and faculty in research contributions.
- Cognitive Offloading: While AI can reduce tedious work, it may also divert users from the essential learning processes that build competence, such as idea generation, grappling with confusion, revision, and self-correction.
Autonomous Agents
Autonomous agents represent AI systems capable of performing research or instructional tasks independently, moving towards a "researcher in a box" concept.
While these tools are anticipated to "free up time" for human capacities like empathy and problem-solving by automating day-to-day instruction and large portions of the research cycle, they also present unique risks. Universities function as systems of practice that rely on a pipeline of graduate students and early-career academics learning through participation in teaching and research. If autonomous agents absorb "routine" responsibilities that traditionally serve as entry points into academic life, it could diminish the opportunity structures necessary for sustaining expertise over time. Similarly, for undergraduates, offloading challenging learning tasks to AI may hinder the development of durable understanding gained through drafting, revising, failure, and critical thinking.
Purpose of the University in an Automated World
The developments in AI integration prompt a fundamental question regarding the purpose of universities in a world where knowledge work is increasingly automated. Two primary perspectives are considered:
Output-Focused Model
This perspective views the university primarily as an engine for producing credentials and knowledge. In this model, efficiency in degree and publication generation through autonomous systems would be a key driver for adoption.
Ecosystem-Focused Model
This alternative perspective assigns intrinsic value to the university's ecosystem, emphasizing the development of human expertise and judgment. It values the pipeline of opportunities for novices to become experts, the mentorship structures that cultivate judgment, and educational designs that encourage productive struggle.
The way universities address these questions will determine their future role and how AI is adopted within higher education.
