Man Charged After Allegedly Ramming Brisbane Synagogue Gates

A man has been charged after allegedly ramming the gates of the Brisbane Synagogue with a vehicle on Friday night, approximately 7:15 PM.

The incident occurred when a black ute allegedly struck and damaged the gates of the Brisbane Synagogue on Margaret Street in the CBD. The vehicle reportedly departed the scene following the collision. No injuries were reported from the incident.

Arrest and Charges

Police located the vehicle a short time later and took a 32-year-old man into custody. He is believed to have acted alone in the alleged incident.

The man has been charged with wilful damage serious vilification or hate crime, dangerous operation of a vehicle, and drug offences. He is scheduled to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court today.

Aftermath and Political Reaction

The synagogue has been closed until further notice to allow for necessary gate repairs.

Premier David Crisafulli stated he had spoken with police about the incident. He described it as concerning and potentially distressing for the Jewish community in Queensland, affirming that the matter is being addressed seriously. Crisafulli also indicated that the alleged incident reinforces the necessity of proposed hate laws currently before parliament, which he intends to have passed during the next sitting.

Opposition leader Steven Miles expressed concern over the incident, stating that Queensland's Jewish community should feel safe and respected, particularly in places of worship.
