Supreme Court Strikes Down Trump Tariffs
Six justices on the Supreme Court voted to strike down tariffs previously enacted by former President Trump. This significant decision involved a unique alignment on the nation's highest court.
The group of justices was equally divided between the court's liberal and conservative wings.
Three justices from the court's liberal wing—Elena Kagan, Sonia Sotomayor, and Ketanji Brown Jackson—all of whom were appointed by Democratic presidents, were part of the majority. The other three justices involved in the decision were appointed by Republican presidents.
Chief Justice John Roberts, an appointee of George W. Bush, authored the majority opinion. Justices Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett, both appointed by Trump during his first term, were also among the six justices forming the majority that struck down the tariffs.
