Notepad to Integrate Image Support on Windows 11

Microsoft is integrating image support into Notepad on Windows 11. This feature is reportedly part of Notepad's existing Markdown capabilities and is expected to have a minimal impact on performance. Users will have the option to disable it via Settings.

Full image support is the next feature slated for Notepad.

Notepad's Evolving Role

Notepad has received several feature upgrades following the discontinuation of WordPad. WordPad previously offered image and Markdown support, positioning it as a less powerful version of Microsoft Word, while Notepad remained a basic text editor.

Microsoft has since added Markdown features to Notepad, allowing for text formatting such as bolding, italicizing, and link insertion. This expansion of features also led to the discovery of a vulnerability in the text editor.

Development and Rollout

An image button has appeared in the "What's new" dialog for some Windows Insider Program participants; however, it is not yet functional. This indicates that image support is under internal development and expected for a broader rollout in the coming months.

Internal builds of Notepad are currently testing image support. Microsoft's assessments indicate that the inclusion of images and other Markdown features will have minimal performance impact.

User Flexibility and Control

The feature will be enabled by default and can be disabled through Notepad's settings. Microsoft states this addition aims to offer users greater flexibility in structuring their text.
