Off-Duty Northstar Employee Found Deceased, Marks Third Resort Fatality in February

A 21-year-old off-duty employee of Northstar California Resort, Colin Kang of Fremont, was found deceased on Thursday morning following a search operation. Kang had been reported missing on Wednesday night after failing to return from skiing.

This incident marks the third death reported at the resort in February.

Incident Details

Colin Kang, 21, an off-duty employee of Northstar California Resort, was reported missing to the Placer County Sheriff's Office around 11 p.m. on Wednesday. Deputies located Kang's vehicle in the Northstar parking lot, confirming he had gone skiing earlier that day and had not returned as expected.

Search teams located Kang's body at approximately 9 a.m. on Thursday. He was found on the advanced Sugar Pine Glade trail at Northstar California Resort in Truckee.

Search and Recovery Operation

The Placer County Sheriff's Office initiated an investigation upon receiving the missing person report. Early Thursday morning, the Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue Team was activated under the direction of the Placer County Office of Emergency Management.

The recovery effort involved a team of 15 specialized skiers, a snowcat, two snowmobilers, and support from Northstar Ski Patrol. The Sheriff’s Office has extended condolences to Kang’s family and friends.

Recent Fatalities at Northstar California

This incident is the third death reported at Northstar California Resort in February.

  • On a Sunday earlier in the month, a 53-year-old individual died following a collision with another skier.
  • On February 6, a 26-year-old individual from Los Angeles died in a separate skiing incident at the resort.
