Google Maps Implements Restricted View for Signed-Out Users

Google Maps has implemented significant changes to its functionality for users who are not signed into a Google account, notably the concealment of user reviews and images. These alterations have been widely reported by users on Reddit over the past week.

Google indicates that this 'limited view' may occur in situations such as Google Maps experiencing issues, detection of unusual traffic on the user's network, or interference from browser extensions.

To circumvent this restricted experience, Google suggests that users sign into Google Maps.

Functional Differences for Signed-Out Users

The distinctions between signed-in and signed-out versions of Google Maps are significant, impacting the depth and breadth of information available to users.

State Park Information Restricted

When viewing a State Park, the signed-in version of Maps offers a rich display, including nearby hotels, rental options, and user-contributed photos, alongside factual information about the area.
In contrast, the signed-out version provides minimal information, notably omitting several nearby businesses and attractions from the map display.

Restaurant Listings: Key Details Absent

For restaurant listings, signed-out Google Maps users can still access essential details such as address, operating hours, and a phone number. However, a wealth of critical information, readily available in the signed-in version, is now conspicuously absent:

  • Dine-in/Takeout/Delivery status
  • User reviews
  • Popular times
  • User photos & videos
  • Menus
  • Related locations

The absence of user reviews represents a particularly notable change, given Google Maps' extensive collection of user-generated content for local businesses and locations.

Google has not publicly commented on these reported changes at the time of reporting.
