Windows 11 Introduces Integrated Network Speed Test from Taskbar

Microsoft is introducing a network speed test feature directly accessible from the Windows 11 taskbar. This new tool, currently undergoing testing with Windows 11 Insiders, is designed to allow users to measure their internet connection performance, including download speed, upload speed, and latency, for various network types.

Feature Overview

The integrated speed test aims to assist users in checking network performance and troubleshooting connection issues.

It is intended to work seamlessly with Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and Cellular connections. When activated, the tool opens in the user's default browser, directing them to Microsoft's Bing search website where the speed test is executed. The backend processing for this test reportedly utilizes services from Ookla, known for Speedtest.com.

Access and Functionality

Users can access the speed test tool through several convenient methods:

  • From the Wi-Fi or Cellular Quick Settings.
  • By right-clicking the network icon in the system tray, where an option labeled "Perform speed test" appears.

The feature measures key metrics essential for understanding network health:

  • Download Speed: The rate at which data is received by the device.
  • Upload Speed: The rate at which data is sent from the device.
  • Latency: The delay in data travel between the device and the server.

This functionality operates as a web-based redirect rather than a fully integrated Windows application.

Availability and Rollout

The network speed test functionality was initially observed in September and has since been mentioned in release notes for Windows 11 beta builds, including 26100.7918 and 26200.7918.

Microsoft plans a gradual rollout of this feature for Windows 11 Insiders. It has been made available across various Insider channels, including Canary, Dev, and Beta builds, and is now also accessible in the Release Preview Channel. Its presence in the Release Preview Channel suggests that a broader general release may be approaching.
