Bill Gates Withdraws from AI Impact Summit Amid Epstein Scrutiny

Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft, withdrew from his scheduled keynote address at the AI Impact Summit in India on Thursday morning, just hours before his planned speech. The decision by the Gates Foundation came "after careful consideration, and to ensure the focus remains on the AI Summit's key priorities." This withdrawal followed increased public scrutiny regarding Gates's past association with Jeffrey Epstein, particularly after the recent release of documents related to Epstein.

Event Details and Foundation Representation

Gates's withdrawal occurred despite the Gates Foundation having affirmed his scheduled attendance less than 48 hours prior. Following his absence, Ankur Vora, president of the Gates Foundation's Africa and India offices, was slated to represent the foundation at the summit.

India's IT minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, commented on Tuesday that Gates' attendance was a matter of "personal choices," declining further comment.

The New Delhi AI Impact Summit featured several prominent participants, including:

  • OpenAI CEO Sam Altman
  • Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai
  • Anthropic's Dario Amodei
  • White House AI adviser Sriram Krishnan
  • French President Emmanuel Macron
  • UK Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy
  • UN Secretary-General António Guterres

Intensified Scrutiny Over Epstein Association

The withdrawal followed intensified scrutiny related to Gates's ties to Jeffrey Epstein, which increased after the late January release of Department of Justice documents, also referred to as Epstein files. These documents included a draft email referencing Gates in the context of facilitating extramarital affairs and sexual encounters. A specific claim within a draft email alleged Gates concealed a sexually transmitted disease from his then-wife following contact with "Russian girls."

Gates denied this specific claim, calling it "absolutely absurd and completely false."

He has previously expressed regret for his interactions with Epstein, stating that these interactions were limited to philanthropy discussions. Gates also denied visiting "the island" or meeting any women through Epstein.

Melinda French Gates' Remarks and Epstein's Fate

Melinda French Gates, Gates's former wife, stated that the recent release of Epstein files brought back "memories of some very, very painful times in my marriage." She added that questions regarding these matters should be answered by others, including her former husband.

Jeffrey Epstein died by suicide in August 2019 while awaiting trial on sexual abuse trafficking charges. He had previously pleaded guilty in 2008 to state charges related to solicitation of prostitution.
