Lang Park's Concert Capacity Set to Nearly Double in One-Year Trial
Brisbane's Lang Park, also known as Suncorp Stadium, is poised to nearly double its concert capacity for a one-year trial period. This temporary measure will allow the venue to host up to 21 concert dates this year, an increase from the previous limit of 12.
The objective of this expansion is to attract more major shows to Queensland and stimulate the local economy.
Official Endorsement and Public Opinion
Minister for Sport and Racing Tim Mander stated that the trial provides more Queenslanders with opportunities to attend performances by top artists. He highlighted the economic benefits observed from recent sold-out concerts. A previous poll indicated that 56 percent of residents in the Lang Park area were open to increasing the concert cap, and the trial's evaluation will determine its future.
Community Concerns and Future Competition
Councillor for Paddington Ward, Seal Chong Wah, expressed reservations about the initiative. She noted potential competition with a future 63,000-seat Victoria Park stadium, which could make attracting concerts more challenging for Lang Park. Councillor Wah also criticized the state government for making a decision without sufficient local community consultation.
Strategic Vision and Logistical Hurdles
Conversely, Tony Cochrane, special envoy for major events in Queensland, referred to the trial as a 'stepping stone' within the state's broader tourism strategy. He acknowledged that organizing shows at Suncorp Stadium currently involves logistical complexities. These include requiring temporary generators and significant street closures.
Industry Support for Major Events
Entertainment industry leader Harvey Lister, who manages several venues, supported the initiative. He noted an increasing trend in outdoor stadium shows and underscored Brisbane's necessity to host major events. Lister believes the increased capacity at Lang Park will provide greater certainty for the touring industry in securing event bids.
A History of Major Acts
Lang Park has previously hosted a stellar lineup of global artists. These include AC/DC, Lady Gaga, Elton John, Taylor Swift, Foo Fighters, and U2. The venue is also scheduled to host British artist Ed Sheeran for three nights this weekend.
