Crosby Injured in Quarterfinal Victory; Canada Advances to Semifinals

Sidney Crosby, Canada's captain and a two-time Olympic gold medalist, sustained an injury to his right leg during the second period of a quarterfinal game against the Czech Republic. Crosby did not return for the third period.

Canada's coach, Jon Cooper, stated that Crosby would be evaluated following the injury. Cooper noted the team's motivation to win the game, not wanting it to be Crosby's last of the Olympics.

The Injury Incident

The injury occurred midway through the second period when Czech defenseman Radko Gudas checked Crosby between the benches. Crosby attempted to avoid the hit, resulting in his legs splitting and his right leg bending awkwardly. Gudas stated he was attempting to finish his check and hoped Crosby was well.

Following a subsequent check from Gudas and Martin Nečas, Crosby showed signs of injury. He skated slowly to the bench before proceeding to the locker room with a trainer.

Canada Rallies for Overtime Win

Despite Crosby's absence, Canada fell behind 3-2 in the third period. Nick Suzuki scored a late-tying goal, forcing overtime. Mitch Marner then scored the winning goal in overtime, securing Canada's advancement to the semifinals.

Teammates React to Crosby's Injury

Teammates expressed concern for Crosby. Defenseman Drew Doughty indicated that other players would need to contribute if Crosby is unable to play in upcoming games. Seth Jarvis and Brad Marchand acknowledged the challenge of losing their leader but praised the team's ability to rally.

Crosby, 38, has recorded two goals and four assists in four games during these Olympics.
