Geelong's Young Talent Shines in Hawthorn Match Simulation

Geelong participated in a match simulation against Hawthorn on Monday, fielding a team with a limited number of experienced players. Only eight players on the field had over 100 games of AFL experience. Despite the relative inexperience, emerging players, including Lenny Hofmann, Jay Polkinghorne, and George Stevens, delivered strong performances.

Edwards Takes On Seasoned Ruckman

Ruckman Mitch Edwards competed against experienced player Lloyd Meek, embracing the challenge. Edwards stated he focused on his athleticism and adapted during the game, viewing the contest as a critical learning opportunity.

"The experience of facing a seasoned AFL ruckman was valuable," Edwards reflected.

He further emphasized the significance of this pre-season period as regular games draw near. Edwards made an immediate impact, leading Geelong in hit-outs during the club's first pre-season hit-out.

Emerging Players Leave Their Mark

Beyond Edwards, other emerging talents also made significant contributions. Jay Polkinghorne impressed in attack, contributing three goals. Lenny Hofmann accumulated possessions effectively, showcasing good kicking skill throughout the match. Edwards acknowledged these strong performances from his fellow emerging talents.

Midfield Synergy and Future Focus

Edwards also commented on the midfield unit's pre-season efforts. He highlighted James Worpel, who recently joined the group and integrated well, alongside first-year players. He specifically mentioned Tom Atkins and George Stevens as effective collaborators within the midfield unit during the simulation.

Anticipating Carlton Challenge

Geelong is scheduled for one more pre-season match, facing Carlton at Ikon Park next Wednesday. This game marks a continuation of preparations for the Opening Round.

"This match will be another beneficial opportunity for development against a strong opponent," Edwards stated, looking ahead to the Carlton clash.

Edwards anticipates this upcoming fixture will be another crucial step for the team's development, especially with some players returning from other commitments to join the squad.
