Max Verstappen Invited to Test Next-Gen Mercedes-AMG GT3 Racer

Formula One driver Max Verstappen has received an open invitation to test drive the next new GT3 racer from Mercedes-AMG. Development of the upcoming AMG GT3 racer is progressing, with a test program scheduled for the Portimao circuit in Portugal next month.

The V8-powered racer is based on the recently unveiled Mercedes-AMG GT 63 PRO, which is priced from $418,900 in Australia.

The GT3 racer could potentially begin competing in the 2027 season, possibly starting with the Bathurst 12-Hour race.

Verstappen's Potential Track Time

Mercedes-AMG has a scheduled test program that could include track time for Verstappen. Christoph Sagemueller, global head of Mercedes-AMG Motorsport, stated that he would be open to Verstappen participating if interested. He noted it would depend on Verstappen's contractual situation with Red Bull Racing and Ford in F1.

Verstappen has previously driven the current AMG GT3 car and established a personal team that will race with AMG GT3 cars in 2026. However, Sagemueller indicated Verstappen would not have input on the successor vehicle.

Development of the New AMG GT3

Sagemueller affirmed that the car's development is on schedule, with the first roll-out occurring in August of the previous year, followed by two days of positive testing. He acknowledged the challenge of improving upon the current successful model, stating the goal is to elevate the car to an even higher level, and noted high demand for the new vehicle.

"The goal is to elevate the car to an even higher level," stated Christoph Sagemueller, global head of Mercedes-AMG Motorsport.

Sagemueller also addressed previous expectations for the car to race this year, admitting to delays. He explained that these delays were to ensure the correct concept and bring the car within the appropriate operating window.

Mercedes-AMG: A Growing Powerhouse

Mercedes-AMG has expanded significantly, growing into a major business unit for the German luxury car brand. Sagemueller, an early employee, noted the workforce has grown to an estimated 3000.

He highlighted AMG's extensive motorsport involvement, including over 100 active racing teams and 48 race weekends annually, emphasizing its role in branding and connecting to road car products. He described AMG as a 'speedboat' to Mercedes' 'cruise ship,' underscoring its importance to the overall Mercedes brand and its operation as a profit center with increasing autonomy.
