The World Club Challenge: A Legacy of Rugby League

The World Club Challenge (WCC) is an annual rugby league fixture, with the 2026 event scheduled between the Broncos and Hull KR. The challenge unofficially began in 1976 with a tie between Eastern Suburbs and St Helens in Sydney, followed by a match between Sea Eagles and Wigan in England in 1987, where Wigan was victorious.

Statistical Overview

Of the 29 WCC games played, English teams have won 15 times. When hosting, English teams have secured 13 victories in 24 matches, though they have been outscored 468 to 401 by touring teams.

In the five games played in Australia, only Wigan (1976) and St Helens (2023) have claimed victory.

English teams hold a slight edge in total WCC victories, but triumphs on Australian soil remain rare for visitors.

Coaching Milestones

Coaches Brian Noble and Trent Robinson stand out with a perfect record of three WCC wins each, without a single loss. Craig Bellamy also boasts three victories, alongside one loss, while veteran coach Wayne Bennett has secured two wins in his five attempts. Brian McDermott has one victory from four WCC appearances.

Five Memorable World Club Challenge Clashes

Ahead of the 2026 World Club Challenge, a review of five notable clashes in the event's history includes:

2001: St Helens Stuns Broncos in a Comeback Thriller

The Brisbane Broncos, featuring stars like Darren Lockyer, Shane Webcke, Petero Civoniceva, and Gorden Tallis, established an 18-6 lead against St Helens at Bolton's Reebok Stadium. Shaun Berrigan and Phillip Lee scored for Brisbane, while Paul Sculthorpe opened St Helens' account, and Brad Myers added another after the break for the Broncos.

However, St Helens orchestrated a remarkable comeback. Sean Long and Chris Joynt crossed the line to narrow the deficit. Paul Sculthorpe then delivered a crucial field goal, followed by another from Long, to secure a memorable victory for St Helens.

2024: Wigan Warriors Edge Penrith Panthers, Field's Heroics Shine

Wigan Warriors triumphed over the Penrith Panthers in a closely contested match that will be remembered for Jai Field's exceptional defensive efforts. Wigan initially opened the scoring through Abbas Miski, with Nathan Cleary responding for Penrith. Miski secured another try for Wigan, before Dylan Edwards narrowed the gap for Penrith.

A controversial try was awarded to Jake Wardle, adding to the drama. The game's turning points came with two crucial defensive plays by Jai Field: first, dragging Taylan May out in the 69th minute, and later, holding May up over the line in a match-winning moment, securing Wigan's victory.

2005: Leeds Rhinos Outscore Bulldogs in Physical Encounter

Leeds Rhinos emerged victorious over the Bulldogs with a final score of 39-32. The match, played at Elland Road, saw the Bulldogs trailing significantly by 20 points at halftime.

A highlight for Leeds was a try by Danny McGuire. However, the game is particularly remembered for the formidable presence of a then 19-year-old Sonny Bill Williams, who delivered two significant shoulder charges on Ryan Bailey and Marcus Bai, making his physical plays a truly memorable aspect of the clash.

2023: St Helens Claims Historic Victory Down Under Against Penrith

In a highly anticipated fixture, St Helens journeyed to Penrith to challenge the Panthers, boasting stars such as Nathan Cleary, Brian To’o, Isaah Yeo, and Stephen Crichton. St Helens, with key players like Konrad Hurrell, Will Hopoate, Lewis Dodd, and Jack Welsby, impressively held the Panthers scoreless for 52 minutes, establishing a 10-0 lead through tries from Welsby and Hurrell.

Penrith began their comeback with a try from Izack Tago. The tension peaked when a 78th-minute try from Brian To’o, followed by a sideline conversion by Nathan Cleary, dramatically tied the game. However, Lewis Dodd then slotted a field goal to secure a stunning and historic victory for St Helens on Australian soil.

1994: Wigan Warriors Make History in Australia Against Brisbane Broncos

In a landmark event, Wigan Warriors made history in 1994 by becoming the first team to win a World Club Challenge game on Australian soil, defeating the Brisbane Broncos at ANZ Stadium before a crowd of over 54,000. Brisbane fielded an impressive lineup including Steve Renouf, Kevin Walters, Allan Langer, Glenn Lazarus, and Wendell Sailor.

Wigan's side featured legendary players like Martin Offiah, Shaun Edwards, Frano Botica, and Gary Connolly. Denis Betts opened the scoring for Wigan, followed by Barrie-Jon Mather. Wendell Sailor responded for Brisbane. In the second half, Jason Robinson extended Wigan's lead. Despite late tries from Michael Hancock and Julian O’Neill for Brisbane, Frano Botica's accurate kicking proved decisive, securing the historic win for Wigan.
